PESSYP
The PE & Sport Strategy for Young People (PESSYP) often referred to as the 5 Hour Offer is now in place. By 2011 the ambition outlined in the Strategy is to offer all children at least 5 hours of sport every week, comprising:
• At least 2 hours high quality PE in the curriculum (5-16 year olds)
• The opportunity for at least a further 3 hours sport beyond the school day delivered by a range of school, community and club providers (5-19 yr olds)
To support this an additional £100m (over 3 years) has been secured for:
• The addition of FE Sports Co-ordinators linked to School Sport Partnerships
• The completion of the roll out of Competition Managers linked to School Sport Partnerships
• Top up grants for School Sport Partnerships to pay Coaches
• Multi sport clubs for children with special needs linked to School Sport Partnerships
• Funding for Sports Unlimited for semi-sporty young people
• National School Sport Week w/c 28 June 2010
The national strategy is being delivered through 10 interlinked work-strands.
Why is PE and sport important?
Taking part in PE and sport has been proven to have asignificant beniefits for young people. A growing eveidence base demonstrates the impact that high quality PE and sport has in improving educational standards. Helping young people to become more active and healthy, can play a central role in developing young people`s confidence and self-esteem, healping develop team working and wider social and personal skills.
Participation in PE and Sport also contributes to achieving wider government policy, including the `Every Child Matters` outcomes to achieve and enjoy, to be healthy and make a positive contribution. Also the first rung on the ladder of talent development school – community – elite level.
Partners are all working to ensure there is a universal five hour offer in place across the country. This will help to ensure the offer is taken up by every young person who wants it.
Long-term aim
• By the end of academic year 2010-2011, 40% of young people to take part in five hours a week PE and sport (three hours for 16 to 19 year olds)
• By the end of the academic year 2012-2013, 60% of young people to take part in five hours a week PE and sport (three hours for 16 to 19 year olds)
• By the end of the academic year 2010-2011, 80% of five to 16 year olds in every School Sport Partnership (SSP) to take part in three hours a week of PE and sport organised by schools
