Coaching Courses Case Study

How has Berkshire Sport worked with other National Governing Bodies to support their coach development?

Background
The Cricket Development Manager, Mark Roche has used the Berkshire Sport support team to administer the attendance on Cricket Coaching courses since 2006. This has always been successful and as Cricket Coaching courses are run between November to March the following year it has been relatively simple to manage.
The new UKCC qualifications have demanded that candidates must attend and have up-to-date Safeguarding & Protecting Children and First Aid courses in order to obtain the relevant UKCC award. Berkshire Sport and Berkshire Cricket have worked together to provide a simple, effective way of ensuring that candidates have all the means necessary to achieve their coaching qualification.
Key Partners
The key partners involved include:

What was done?

As part of the work done by the Berkshire Sports Development Officer generic coaching courses are offered to clubs and coaches across the county. These include the minimum operating courses such as First Aid and Safeguarding & Protecting Children.

In order to support the number of candidates from the UKCC Cricket Coaching Levels 1 & 2 the course programme has been amended. The programme now includes more Safeguarding & Protecting Children and First Aid Courses between the months of November and March the following year to coincide with the Cricket UKCC Levels 1 & 2. These workshops are of course open to the general sporting population but are quickly filled up by cricket coaches wanting to complete their Level 1 & 2 coaching qualifications.

First Aid and Safeguarding & Protecting Children Courses have also been held for cricket coaches and clubs only.

The Challenges

With over 100 candidates on the Cricket UKCC Levels 1 and 2 Berkshire Sport cannot always guarantee or reserve places for those coaches wishing to attend Child Protection and First Aid courses. Berkshire Sport has therefore organised First Aid courses for Cricket and Safeguarding & Protecting Children courses for cricket coaches only. This has made it easier for coaches and clubs to access the courses in order to gain their qualification.

Impacts

More coaches are able to complete their UKCC Level 1 and 2 qualifications.

The Future

Berkshire Sport is keen to support other National Governing Bodies by providing minimum operating standard courses to run at the same time as the NGB Specific courses.
