Walk England are launching the ‘Walk4Life Miles’ project in mid-September to coincide with a large media campaign being run by ITV and culminating in a national day of walking on the 26th September 2010.
The Walk4Life Miles project will deliver 2,012 waymarked one mile walking routes in local communities, as well as provide a unique online database of short walks. At the heart of the project is a brand new public facing web portal where people can find walking routes or create their own, record their walking activity, find local events, join groups and challenge themselves and others to walk more.
Ahead of the launch in September, we are inviting local organisations, communities and individuals to be part of the project by :
• identifying one mile routes that can be waymarked on the ground and added to the site
• sharing with us their favourite daily short (4 – 5 miles maximum) walking routes for inclusion on the web portal.
• letting us know of events planned to celebrate National Walk Day so we can include them in our publicity.
The website will go ‘live’ to the general public on 17th September with the URL www.walk4life.info which will also be the main web address which ITV will be giving out to viewers wanting to find walking opportunities in their local communities.
All the information you need to join in is available by following this link to our website : http://www.walkengland.org.uk/content/acr.aspx
Here you will find information about the project, guidance on how to identify routes, how to waymark them, how to add routes to our web portal (this facility will be available from August 2010) and/or share digital route data with us.
If you would like to be registered for updates on the project and to receive further guidance, please email Caroline.markham@walkengland.org.uk
We are also appealing to community groups to run walking events as part of the National Day of Walking on or around the 26th September. We will be providing a dedicated online tool, accessed via www.walk4life.info to record these events and share this information with the general public.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you need more information. We do hope that you will be able to take part in this opportunity and that together we can get as many people walking as possible.
