Peer support
There is a great deal to be learnt from other coaches either through shadowing or mentoring. Asking your local club’s coach if you can assist or shadow their work is a good way of getting started in coaching.
Safeguarding your own future
As a coach you will be a role model and someone in a position of responsibility. Whether you are working with children or adults you need to take this responsibility seriously, ensuring you are up to date with your Safeguarding and Protecting Children certificate and latest information is a good place to start. Contact your NGB for further information regarding Safeguarding issues, or search through the Safeguarding pages of our website.
Berkshire Sport offers Safeguarding and Protecting Children courses that are heavily subsidised. Details of all courses that Berkshire Sport run can be found here.
Remember that it is likely you will be asked to complete a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check. Although completing a CRB form may be onerous it is essential to protect the vulnerable adults/children you are working with as well as yourself. To find out further information regarding CRB checks please click here
Insurance
Cover yourself by getting insurance, don’t rely on your club getting insurance for you or on their public liability insurance as this will not cover you for many issues. Your NGB may offer insurance as a separate entity, or as part of their courses or coaching licenses. If your NGB does not offer insurance you are able to get insurance through sportscoach UK. Coaching Opportunities
Your local sports club would be able to support you in providing coaching experience, usually assisting the head coach in their sessions. Local Authorities, NGB’s and schools may also have coaching opportunities, please use the contacts pages on our website for further information.
